raiding Rick Perry and Texas by tweeting a Top 10 list
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has pulled up the welcome mat.
Last week, Nixon scoffed at Gov. Rick Perry’s jobs hunting trip to Missouri. But that was when relatively tame TV ads were being aired with business owners touting the Lone Star State.
Nixon then went on the offensive, touting Missouri’s attractions and taking a few digs at Perry.michael kors outlet He suggested the Texan is trying to “remain relevant to the political discourse” after deciding not to seek re election.
But attacking “our state and our local chambers that are working hard every day with us to create jobs, that will get my dander up a little bit,” Nixon said.
He fashioned a Top 10 list on Twitter to showcase the Show Me State over Texas, using the hashtag betterthantx.
It’s not the first time that rival governors have clashed with the Republican Perry over his recruiting trips. He also got knocks from California Gov. Jerry Brown and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, both Democrats.
Raiders Trade Down and Down
East BayNorth BaySan FranciscoSouth BayMaybe it’s just shrewd. Sure, some Raiders fans are going to stew in their six packs all weekend because a bad, bad offensive line was not addressed in the first two rounds. But this is an NFL Draft particularly rich with OT’s, and they’re not flying off the shelves as quickly as had been anticipated. Some of the guys the Raiders want figure to still be available later, plus the Raiders have parlayed themselves some additional picks.Houston, who actually is the size of a large city in Texas, seemed thrilled to go to the Raiders. “I’m happy, it’s a blessing,” Houston told Deion Sanders on the NFL Network, “I’m going to be back in California, where I was born.”So who’d the Raiders pass on to acquire these precious fifth and sixth rounders? The Buccaneers took receiver Arrelious Benn. If that gets 1,000 yards receiving this season, I will eat a bag of unsold No. 12 Darrius Heyward Bey jerseys. The Patriots used that 42nd pick to take tight end Rob Gronkowski, whom the NFL Network’s Mike Mayock called “a first round pick” and “a steal at 42.” I’d just like to have seen Gradkowski to Gronkowski completion.
Ramirez happy to be in Toledo
On Tuesday, the Mud Hens added a familiar face to the roster.
Wilkin Ramirez, who played in 113 games for Toledo last season, was promoted from Double A Erie. He took the place of Deik Scram, who was sent back to the SeaWolves.
Last season Ramirez actually did make it to the next level, playing in 15 games for Detroit. He finished last season with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs for the Hens and also had 33 stolen bases, the fifth best total in the International League.
So it was a surprise when Ramirez was sent back to Double A to begin this season.
“It was taking a step backwards, and nobody wants to do that,” Ramirez said. “It’s the same as in life you don’t want to do that. You want to keep going forward.
“I went there and let everyone know that I just wanted to play. Anywhere they wanted to put me, I was going to play and play hard.”
In 54 games with Erie this season, Ramirez led the Eastern League with 15 home runs and had 42 RBIs. But the biggest change was his move to center field.
“I’m comfortable playing center field and right field and left field,” Ramirez said. “Everyone knows that I can run, and if you can run you can play center.
“Every day I feel better and better there.”
Mud Hens manager Larry Parrish used Ramirez in center twice last season, so he looks forward to an extended look at the 24 year old at this new position.
“So far he has looked good out there,” Parrish said of Ramirez. “We’ll continue to bounce he and [Casper] Wells between center and right.”
THE REST OF THE ROSTER: The Ramirez Scram move wasn’t the only change to the roster during the team’s recent road trip.
On Tuesday, the Tigers promoted IF Danny Worth to take the place of Adam Everett, who was designated for assignment.
Two days later, Detroit called up RHP Enrique Gonzalez to take the place of Ryan Perry, who was placed on the disabled list. Toledo received LHP Matt Hoffman from Erie to take the place of Gonzalez.
Hoffman began the season with Single A Lakeland, going 0 1 with three saves and a 1.59 ERA before earning a promotion to Erie, where he gave up six hits and four runs in three innings.
OF Clete Thomas will miss the rest of the season after having microfracture surgery on his left knee.
Currently the Mud Hens have 23 players on the active roster, one under the IL limit.
DEFENSIVE WOES: The movement of Hens around the diamond has caused Toledo to rank near the bottom of the IL in defense.
The Hens entered last night’s game with a .979 fielding percentage, which ranks 12th in the 14 team league. What’s more, they have 11 passed balls, tied for most in the IL.
Toledo’s 48 errors have resulted in 32 unearned runs.
LUCKY SEVEN: In the International League, doubleheaders and suspended games result in seven inning contests. http://www.handbagsmk.top And those seven inning games have been good to the Hens, who are 6 1 in seven inning games this season.
Toledo has twice swept twinbills from Lehigh Valley and split a doubleheader against Rochester. A suspended game against Charlotte in early May resulted in a seven inning contest, and the Hens won that game.
LUCK ‘O THE IRISH: The Mud Hens will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day albeit three months late Thursday.
Toledo will be wearing green jerseys for the contest, with the jerseys being auctioned during the game. Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Salvation Army.
