Philadelphia 76ers rookie Jerami Grant wears number of significance in NBA Summer League
Jerami Grant, the former Syracuse University forward who is now a rookie with the Philadelphia 76ers, is wearing a very unusual number while playing in the NBA’s Summer League in Orlando.
Grant’s jersey number is No. 39. It’s a number rarely seen, but it carries a lot of meaning.
Grant expected to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft when he decided to leave Syracuse after his sophomore season. cheap jerseys Grant, a 6 foot 8 forward, had averaged 12.1 points and 6.8 rebounds for the Orange this past season. He was viewed as a prospect with a lot of athleticism and potential, but his offensive skills were raw.
On draft night, Grant slid into the second round of the draft. Philadelphia finally took him with the 39th overall pick. Hence, the number 39.
The number is no accident. Grant is wearing it as a reminder and motivation.
“He’s going to come in and play with a little chip on his shoulder and get the job done,” Grant’s father, Harvey, told the Morning Call of Allentown, Pa.
Grant wore No. 3 in his two years at Syracuse. It’s not certain if Grant will continue to wear the No. 39 when the NBA’s regular season rolls around in the fall. If he does, he will join a short list of players who have worn No. 39 in NBA history.
